Sussex has a strong base of local enterprise and a large working age population. Our economy depends on employers being able to grow, hire and invest without facing avoidable barriers. My economic priority is to create the conditions that allow enterprise to flourish across every part of the county.
Sussex needs space for businesses to expand and confidence for investors to commit. I will focus on supporting growth in towns and rural areas, encouraging development that brings empty or underused sites back into productive use and strengthens the commercial environment.
Skills remain a central issue for employers. As mayor I will be responsible for adult education, and my priority is to ensure that the skills system reflects the realities of the Sussex economy. This means helping more residents gain the capabilities that local firms consistently say they need, allowing people to move into better jobs and supporting stronger recruitment.
Town centres and commercial districts are vital to local prosperity. Many need new momentum after years of slow progress. I will focus on supporting renewal that attracts businesses and long term activity, creating places where enterprise can thrive.
Digital capability is now basic economic infrastructure. Strong broadband, reliable mobile coverage and modern digital access help firms trade, innovate and compete. I will work with providers to support improvements across the county so that every area can participate fully in modern economic life.
My approach is practical and grounded in what businesses across Sussex identify as the essentials: clarity, confidence, skills, space and modern connectivity. The aim is a stronger, more resilient and more enterprising Sussex economy that gives every community the chance to prosper.
