Public protection will be a central responsibility of the Mayoral office. Residents expect policing that responds quickly, handles situations confidently and applies the law consistently. Officers and staff work under significant pressure, and they need a clear framework that enables them to deliver an effective and dependable service.
The Mayor will set priorities for policing in Sussex and ensure they are delivered. Neighbourhood policing will address the issues that affect daily life, with defined standards for shoplifting, antisocial behaviour and crime in rural areas so that residents see consistent outcomes.
The policing budget and the Police and Crime Plan will be structured to support an increase in front line numbers and to ensure that resources are used transparently. Recruitment is carried out by the Chief Constable, but the Mayor sets the framework, priorities and funding that make sustained growth in officer numbers possible across Sussex.
Communities expect genuine access to policing. Local facilities must meet that expectation. Sussex Police will be required to set a countywide standard for neighbourhood bases and to produce an estates plan that provides practical access in the areas that need it most. Delivery of these commitments will be monitored closely.
A Sussex Public Protection Board will bring policing, councils and key agencies together within a single working arrangement. This will improve joint problem solving, reduce delays between services and create a more consistent approach across Divisions.
The safety of women and girls will be a core measure of performance. High levels of stalking, harassment and repeat domestic abuse in Sussex demand early decisions, strong case management and firm action against offenders. Mainstream policing will lead on this work, supported by more effective information sharing.
Sussex must also be prepared for major incidents. Flooding, severe weather and pressure on essential infrastructure present real risks. The Sussex Resilience Forum provides the basis for joint planning, and preparedness will be strengthened so that policing, fire and rescue, councils and health services act in step when serious events occur.
Public protection supports every aspect of life in Sussex. It enables growth, strengthens communities and reassures residents in the places where they live and work. As Mayor, I will provide clear leadership for policing and resilience planning and ensure that Sussex has a confident and effective approach to safety.
